While
classic white used to be the only choice, you now have a colorful range of
options – the possibilities for color in the bathroom are virtually unlimited. Different colors
can also have completely different effects and some colors don't work well
together. Do some colors
in the bathroom work better than others? Which colors work particularly
well together? And are there any other issues that need to be considered? We'll
help you answer all of these questions.
What Are Some General Considerations For Colors in the Bathroom?
What Are Some General Considerations For Colors in the Bathroom?
Though
individual tastes can vary, it is still possible to set out a few general
guidelines. Because bathrooms always serve as functional rooms, the furnishings
and color schemes should always play a supporting role. That's why we recommend
following these guidelines:
Don't make it too colorful:
As tempting as a selection
might be in the moment, it makes sense to focus on a reduced color scheme in the bathroom
instead of mixing too many colors together. Using too many colors creates a
restless feeling that few would want to experience in a bathroom.
Our
tip: The Vitrium series, for
example, is perfect for creating bathrooms with only one color.
Use Accents:
Bathrooms with only one
color are an easy way to commit to a design. But this is not a possibility with
all colors. For example, a bathroom
with a red that is especially strong and bright probably won't seem very
calming or expansive. The same holds true for other vibrant colors. You should
instead focus on using individual accents that you can combine with calmer
pastel tones or neutral colors.
Where Can Colors in the Bathroom Be Used Well?
Where Can Colors in the Bathroom Be Used Well?
If
you don't want to design your bathroom using just one color, the question
arises as to where you can use color accents to the best effect. There are a
few options to choose from.
Ceramics:
The go-to color for
bathroom ceramics is still white, but black or gray ceramics are no longer an
uncommon choice. The neutral look of these colors makes them particularly easy
to combine with others. Of course, you can also take the opposite approach and
choose more striking colors for the ceramics and keep the rest of the colors in your bathroom
neutral.
Faucets:
Faucets are a great way to
add a colorful accent to the room. You can also take a higher quality approach
here. For example, using bathroom
faucets in gold alongside white ceramics makes a sophisticated
impression. Shades of gold or bronze also go perfectly with black ceramics. The
metal tones aren't overwhelming since, from a visual perspective, they only
make up a small part of the room.
Tiles:
The tile color in your bathroom is easy to adapt to
the rest of the color scheme – because tiles usually work best when they
support the overall visual impression rather than playing the starring role.
The color doesn't always have to be exactly the same as the rest of the
bathroom. For example, a slightly darker shade in the tiles can often enhance a
lighter color in the ceramics or the furnishings, as long as the shades
themselves work well together. Or you can always choose a more reserved color
here too.
Wall color:
Although similar rules apply to the wall color
as to the tile color in your
bathroom, the ongoing trend of having one or two walls with a different
color provides plenty of options for adding accents. In this case, the wall color in the bathroom
should never stand alone; it should instead be reflected in other bathroom
elements as well
Bathroom furniture:
It is best to think in terms of
uniformity when it comes to bathroom furniture. In bathrooms with a lot of
colors, the furniture should ideally be in the wall color for the bathroom or match the color of
the faucets. There is, however, one major exception: The natural look of wood
or stone will work well with every color in the bathroom.
Bathroom accessories:
Similar to faucets,
accessories are a perfect way to try using some more daring colors in your bathroom.
You can use them to create interesting accents without visually overwhelming
the room. Another advantage is that it's relatively easy to change out your
accessories. If you don't like the color of a towel, you can simply replace it
with a different one that matches better. This also means that you can add
ever-changing accents and always keep the aesthetic of your bathroom looking
fresh and new.
What Impression Do Different Colors in the Bathroom Make?
What Impression Do Different Colors in the Bathroom Make?
Choosing
the right color for your
bathroom is always a matter of style. What kind of atmosphere do you
want to create in your bathroom? White bathrooms
have a classic and clean look, while gray bathrooms
have a reserved and understated charm. Combining several colors needs to be
considered very carefully. The following are some especially trendy examples:
Black and white:
Solid black bathrooms are
no doubt stylish, but they can be hard to pull off if they don't have enough
natural light. A black and
white bathroom can be the perfect solution for a darker room, where this
elegance can really come into its own. The combination of white ceramics and
floor tiles with black faucets, furniture and walls works especially well.
Green:
Not all greens are the
same. Brighter greens in particular often tend not to have a very natural look
and they rarely work all that well. On the other hand, natural shades of green
create a perfect calm with furniture that has a stone or wood finish. On a
related note, you can paint your bathroom in green with gray or white to underscore the natural
impression. If you want metal colors for the faucets, darker shades of gold or
bronze make a particularly good impression as well.
Blue:
Blue is a perfect color for
the bathroom: Whether it is a relaxed sky blue or a deep sea blue, the
association with the bathroom is always apparent. Last but not least, the
calming effect of blue makes it an excellent choice. Whether you go with walls,
tiles or bathroom furniture in
blue, if you want a relaxed atmosphere, this will always be a great
choice. But it's important to make sure that the overall impression doesn't
become too cold if you tend towards more tranquil shades of blue. If you're
unsure, using warm accents in the faucets or accessories can help.
Beige:
When it comes to color in the bathroom,
consider using beige for a
modern touch. The combination of different light, sandy tones is a
popular trend in bathroom design. A bathroom in beige with white faucets also makes a calm impression
where relaxation will always be on the agenda. Like wood-colored furniture, beige bathroom furniture can
be combined with a multitude of other colors.
Of course, there are a
number of other options, such as a bathroom in yellow or red, which can impart an invigorating
feeling when used correctly. As with all colors in the bathroom, there is no
"right" choice here because individual preferences vary from person
to person. So the best thing to do is to choose what personally makes you feel
most comfortable.
Colors in the Bathroom: Which Can I Paint With?
Colors in the Bathroom: Which Can I Paint With?
In addition to purely
aesthetic aspects, there is another point that you should consider when
planning the color of your bathroom. Since bathrooms are especially
moisture-prone areas, special bathroom
paint should be used in order to prevent mold and mildew from forming.
There are several possibilities for this:
Silicate paint:
Silicate paint is especially well suited for use in the bathroom
because it has a high pH value, which mold doesn't like at all. However, it can
be difficult to work with because the pH value makes the paint corrosive in
liquid form. Because of this, it is only available in selected specialist
stores.
Whitewash:
The high pH value is also the decisive advantage
of using whitewash in the
bathroom. However, it isn't particularly durable on many surfaces and it
also isn't scratch-resistant. Several coats are needed. A natural whitewash is
an especially good solution for people with allergies.
Latex paint:
The durability of this bathroom paint, along with the fact that it
is easy to clean, are definitely in its favor. However, using latex paint in the bathroom is not 100% waterproof, which means it is
not completely safe from mold. From an aesthetic point of view, the slight
shine that the matte types of latex paint often have should also be taken into
account.
Other specialized paint:
Many hardware stores and specialist shops also
offer their own paints for
moisture-prone areas, which can have different combinations of
components as their base. For example, there are also paints that have
fungicides and biocides in them to naturally prevent mold formation. However,
you should find out about any potential issues with allergies.
